History and Heritage

Milligan and SherryOver the past season current Club Captain Robbie Fulker has been actively promoting a pictorial history of the golf club with a wonderful array of images and artefacts now adorning the walls of the clubhouse.

Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club has a fine history stretching more than a century with many champions emanating from the ranks of members and others winning events at the club.

Gordon Sherry and Jim Milligan are pictured with the Walker Cup, in which they both played on wining teams, whilst Irishman Ronan Rafferty below won the British Boys in 1979 at Barassie.

Over the coming weeks and months this section of the website will increasingly feature the history and heritage of the club with the aim of becoming an archive of anecdotes and images.

We've started off with a reproduction of the extremely rare Jubilee Book from 1937; it is a truly great document for members old and new to grasp the history of the club. We'll follow this with the Centenary Book "...more a way of life" written by Past Captain Alan Stewart.

The Jubilee Book

One of the framed image sets is taken from this great wee book. Published in 1937 to celebrate the first fifty years with a Gold Foil cover by The Standard Press in Kilmarnock the photos were provided by Hector Macdonald whose family still has the shop in Bank Street in Klmarnock.

The understated nature of the introduction is wonderful and given what was to ensue in the following years it certainly represents more than just a snapshot in history.

"This Jubilee brochure, designed for private circulation among the members of Kilmarnock (Barassie) Golf Club, has been prepared and is issued by authority of the committee, in the belief that members may appreciate a souvenir of an interesting occasion in the history of the club."

We have reproduced the Jubilee Book to be viewed in Barassie's Gallery or for download a copy of the Barassie Jubilee book to print as a PDF to be read in the traditional manner on paper!

We hope you enjoy it as much as we have.
